Clean-Up 26th Feb ’11

Eco warriors ready to clean up !
Eco warriors ready to clean up !

Towards the end of each month a day is set aside to clean up a chosen location both on land and under the sea. This month the southern beach of Chalok was chosen. Divers and non divers from schools all over the island come together to scour the area and ensure that any land based rubbish cannot make its way to the ocean and any that has is cleared too.

Volunteers met at New Heaven Dive School in Chalok and Jess from the Land Conservation office organized the on land portion of the day. The team collected bag fulls of waste and encountered a few interesting spiders too. Harry was pinched momentarily and actually taken into a mans house to collect his recycling !

After a lunch break, divers were ferried over to the dive boats and the underwater clean up began. Around 156 Kgs or what was mostly nets and ropes were cleared. Oil filters and batteries were also found along with a pipe fish.

Clean ups take place towards the end of every month so contact us if you want to get involved with the next one.
