Where to keep fit on Koh Tao?

You could be forgiven for thinking that Ko Tao is just about diving and partying with no thought to healthy lifestyles and fitness pursuits, but you would be wrong.

Yoga is an island mainstay in Thailand and its available wherever you go, Ko Tao is no different. The longest running sala is in Sairee at Blue Wind Resort and is open to anyone whatever level. You’ll find the sala by walking north from the main road 7/eleven.   Classes run every day at 10am, on Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday there’s a class at 4pm also and on Mondays and Thursdays there’s a 6.30pm class. The sala is clean, airy and quiet offering a restive space for practice. Classes cost 300 baht, or buy a pack of 10 for  2,500 baht.    Styles vary over the lessons and private classes are available too, pop in just before or just after a class to have a chat to find out more.

A recent addition is a sala which holds Thai Chi classes, self defense classes as well as yoga, meditation and acupuncture. Yoga classes are daily at 10am, 1pm and 7pm and cost 150B. Thai Chi is taught at 8am on Monday and Friday and 7.30am on a Wednesday. Self defense is on a Monday and Friday at 5pm. As they are just getting started there’s a lot going on, being added and changing so do pop in for more up to date information. You will find Grounded in Sairee by leaving the main road 7/Eleven and walking away from the sea and up the hill and then turning right at Suksamran Villas.

There’s a modern newly furbished gym too which is located in Sairee away from the main hustle and bustle. Simply leave the main road 7/eleven, walk away from the beach and towards the boxing stadium and you will find the gym just passed it on the right hand side. Its open to anyone, a daily membership is just 200B and if you are a longer stayer then they offer a range of memberships which would suit almost anyone. They are open from 7.30am to 11pm on weekdays and 8am to 10pm on weekends.

Ko Tao also has a fully equipped Muay Thai school too. The stadium hosts weekly fights as well as training packages on a daily, weekly or monthly basis. Training starts early morning before the sun heats up the island and there is also an afternoon session too. Single classes are 400B each and a monthly package is 7,300B. The centre is also home to a small gym which offers you more opportunity to train for fighting fitness. You’ll find the stadium up the road from the main road 7/eleven in Sairee just before the gym.

After all this energy expended you are likely to need some nourishment and nutrition. Happily healthy food stuffs are also available. Living Juices operate in the morning just alongside Banyan Bar and opposite Asia Divers in Sairee. The juice bar serves freshly pressed vegetable juice for that healthy nutrition hit. The team also offers nutrition advice and health coaching. They run regular workshops covering various aspects of nutritional based food preparation.  Acupuncture and zero balancing appointments can be made here too.

While you are here remember that there are many pursuits that will not only keep you fit but let you enjoy the island too. There are some awesome walks up to view points, you can work out your arms by exploring the coastline with a kayak, you can run along Sairee Beach at sunset and you can snorkel until your heart’s content at any one of the lovely bays.
