April sees a big push by Project Aware to gather signatures to a world wide petition to lobby policy makers to take action to protect sharks once and for all !
Sharks suffer from fishing, by-catch and of course the horrific practice of finning for soup! Here on Koh Tao we have watched the shark population dwindle and very rarely see sharks at Chumphon Pinnacle anymore. Its been three years since I saw one there.
In 2010 CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) shocked the world by failing to approve protection of sharks. All the species proposed for protection met the critera and with 10s of millions of sharks killed each year by man its shocking that all were rejected. Currently only the whaleshark, basking shark and great white are protected.
Project Awares drive to collect signatures is aimed at the 2013 summit. Anyone can get involved, by signing the petition below or collecting signatures themselves too. There is a Facebook application too – which is simple to add to your page and many more ideas. At Master Divers we have added the Facebook application to our page, launched the signature widget below, integrated the petition into our boat briefing to drive signatures on the petition in the dive centre. and we are all sharing this page to dive more signatures…… What are you going to do to help ?
