Beyond the Bite: Launching the PADI Full Face Mask Specialty in Koh Tao

Tired of jaw fatigue, mask fog, and standard tunnel vision? We’ve officially introduced the PADI Full Face Mask Specialty to Master Divers here in Koh Tao. Here’s a look at how natural nose-breathing and panoramic views completely change the diving experience, what the training involves, and why it’s worth trying on your next dive.

Why We’re Bringing Full Face Masks to Koh Tao (And Why You’ll Want to Try One)

There is a moment on almost every dive where standard gear asks for a small compromise. Maybe it’s the dull ache in your jaw after fifty minutes of clamping down on a mouthpiece. Maybe it’s a streak of fog creeping across your lens right as a school of barracuda passes by. Or maybe it’s just the chilly nip of a thermocline hitting your cheeks at depth.

We’re always looking for ways to improve your underwater experience, which is why we’ve officially launched the PADI Full Face Mask (FFM) Specialty Course at Master Divers.

It’s not just specialized kit for film crews or public safety teams—it’s an accessible, incredibly comfortable way to completely transform your time on Koh Tao's reefs.

The Real Difference Underwater

If you’ve only ever used standard gear, strapping into a full face mask feels surprisingly intuitive after about three minutes. The practical upgrades are immediate:

  • Breathe through your nose and mouth: You no longer have to fight the reflex to inhale through your nose. Breathing feels completely natural, eliminating dry throat, mouth fatigue, and jaw clenching for good.

  • True panoramic vision: Without a bulky nose pocket in your way, your peripheral and downward vision opens up. You get a clean, wide-angle vista across pinnacles like Chumphon and Southwest.

  • Zero fogging: Every inhalation circulates fresh, dry gas straight across the visor. You can leave the spit, defog drops, and mid-dive mask flooding behind.

  • Thermal protection and security: The mask seals your entire face, keeping you warmer on deeper or longer dives. The secure strap harness also prevents accidental dislodging, even in tricky currents.

  • Underwater comms capability: Equipped with optional communications units, you can talk directly with your buddy or instructor instead of relying entirely on hand signals and tank bangers.

What the Course Involves

Diving an integrated mask requires solid muscle memory, so we run this course with the same small groups, relaxed pace, and unhurried approach we bring to everything at the shop:

  1. Equipment Assembly & Fit: We cover how the oral-nasal pocket functions, integrate your redundant gas supply, and adjust the internal nose blocks so equalizing is effortless.

  2. Confined Water Training: In a calm, controlled setting, you'll drill essential emergency skills—clearing a partially flooded mask, sharing air, and smoothly transitioning between your full face mask and a standard backup.

  3. Open Water Dives: Two ocean dives at our favorite local dive sites to fine-tune buoyancy (the mask adds slight positive lift at the head) and enjoy the sheer ease of natural breathing underwater.

Who Is It For?

You don’t need hundreds of dives under your belt to sign up. All you need is your PADI Open Water Diver certification (or equivalent) and an appetite to try a different way of moving through the water. It’s an ideal match for photographers wanting stable, wide-angle sightlines, divers who suffer from jaw tension, or anyone who loves mastering new gear.
