Here we are with a fresh version of our Weekly Dive Site Report. Unfortunately in the last 7 days the weather has been playing up a little bit and once again we’ve seen some wind & rain. Good news is, the conditions are still great as you can see in our little clip here:
Our students and fundivers had the chance to visit a variety of sites in the last week from Lighthouse Bay in the Northeast of Koh Tao to White Rock on the West side of the island.
Sometimes, when you take a closer look at the reef you can see how pretty the ‘ordinary’ things actually are. Did you know how pretty & colorful sea urchins actually are? But be careful with your buoyancy, you don’t want to bump into one of these spiky things:
On the other hand you might get lucky and find a ‘new’ nudibranch, one that you hadn’t seen before around Koh Tao. They can be as small as a fingernail (or as big as a thumb) and incredibly difficult to spot:
One of our local favourite spots is Junkyard, an artificial reef project that we have mentioned multiple times here already. It’s quite a ‘fun’ dive site and always worth a visit. You can see that the local marine life inhabits the artificial structures and using Junkyard for some regular dives, takes some of the pressure of our natural reefs:
The location for these artificial structures was very carefully selected. Not only was this project supposed to give a variety of reef fish a new home, but it was also ensured that the existing habitat (like this little anemone that is home to an entire clownfish family and their offspring) wasn’t under threat:
If you are interested in exploring Junkyard Reef and other local dive sites with us, feel free to send us a message. And if you just don’t have the time (or money) for a trip to Koh Tao at the moment, make sure to come back to this blog next Monday for a new update on our diving conditions and local marine life!
